Passive FBG open/close interlock switches for intrusion detection at access portals such as manholes, hatchways and handholes. Many switches network on a single fiber and report to a remote controller.

Each switch changes the strain state of an internal FBG between its open and closed positions, producing a 1 nm wavelength shift that the controller reads. Because sensing is entirely optical the switches need no power at the sensor location, tolerate high EMI/RFI industrial environments and can be sited tens of kilometres from the base unit over standard communication fiber. Standard center wavelengths run 1512 to 1588 nm in 4 nm intervals, with an extended 1460-1620 nm range available, allowing many uniquely addressed switches per strand. The housing is Zamak with a thermoplastic head and is rated IP66 for 1,000,000 mechanical cycles.
